Endoscopic surgery is the performance of surgical procedures using endoscopes without the opening of the abdominal wall. Endoscopes are instruments of small diameter, inserted through the cavities of the human body, not otherwise accessible for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. More specifically, the laparoscope is inserted through a small hole (one hundredth of a meter) around the umbilicus which allows us to ‘see’ the intra-abdominal organs. With the use of the hysteroscope which is inserted from the lower part of the uterus, we can check the uterine cavity. With time and further technological advancement, such diagnostic techniques were developed even further. Nowadays it is possible to insert auxiliary tools through the abdominal wall areas (of a few millimetres in diameter) and laser beams in order to perform surgical operations.
Examples being the following:
- Removal of Ovarian Cysts
- Exclusion of Uterine Fibroids
- Ectopic Pregnancy
- Cauterization of Endometriosis
- Diagnostic Laparoscopy
- Adhesiolysis
- Total Hysterectomy
- Subtotal Hysterectomy
